This photograph of President Ronald Reagan and General Secretary Mikhail S. Gorbachev, leader of the Soviet Union, was taken in December 1987 during an official visit. The two leaders shake hands outside the South Portico on the South Lawn. This was the first United States visit by a leader of the Soviet Union since Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev visited the U.S. in 1973.
