Martha Washington
This oil on canvas portrait of First Lady Martha Washington was painted by celebrated portraitist Eliphalet Frazer Andrews. He painted this
seventy-six years after Mrs. Washington's death and it is based on a head and bust oil sketch done by Gilbert Stuart. During President Washington's administration, from 1789-1797, Mrs. Washington is said to have created an atmosphere of warm hospitality in the temporary capitals of New York and Philadelphia despite her dislike of formal affairs and society.
