Japanese Embassy Reception Painting
One of the highlights of the Buchanan White House was the reception of the Japanese Embassy on May 17, 1860. Buchanan, surrounded by his Cabinet, received the Japanese Ambassadors in the East Room. The two countries spoke pledges of friendship and trade. The room was so crowded with dignitaries wanting to see the Japanese that women stood on chairs to get a better view.
