East Room Painting
President Jackson decorated the East Room with bright yellow wallpaper, blue and yellow curtains, blue upholstery and carpeting, and golden stars. The ceiling itself was white (white-washed yearly to keep it clean) with flower-like centerpieces from which three glass chandeliers hung, each eight feet from top to bottom and holding 54 candles. There were also twenty-one spittoons placed strategically around the room. Over President Jackson's two terms, Congress allotted around $50,000 to redecorate the White House and build the North Portico. Creator: Sachse, E. & Co., 1861.
