Depiction of the Hayes Family
The Hayes family spent their time together in the White House library reading books, listening to music, and playing games. Scott and Fannie Hayes went to school in one of the upstairs rooms in the White House. On Sundays President and Mrs. Hayes invited cabinet members and senators to join them in the library to sing hymns. In this image entitled Washington D.C. - Social Life in the National Capitol - An Evening in the Private Parlors , Carl Schurz, the Secretary of the Interior, plays on the piano, Mrs. Hayes sits behind him with her son Scott, Fannie talks to a gentleman on the sofa, and President Hayes sits at the table.
