Washington, D.C.

The White House Historical Association announced today the release of its new publication, The Gingerbread White House: A Pop-Up Book by Chuck Fischer with text by Former White House Pastry Chef Roland Mesnier with Pastry Chef Mark Ramsdell.

The playful oversized pop-up book includes illustrated text featuring child-oriented descriptions of the White House and the many rooms, activities, and people that inhabit the People’s House. Recipes for making a White House gingerbread house and other White House holiday cookies are accompanied by a gingerbread scratch-n-sniff element, as well as playful cut-outs of sugared Christmas trees, White House chefs, a Secret Service agent, the presidential limousine and more.

Candy cane columns topped with gumdrops frame the North Portico of the gingerbread White House. Marzipan figures ranging from carolers to beloved White House pets are visible on the south view of the confectionary White House. The royal icing piped details that bring to life the windows, architectural details, and winter landscape of the real life gingerbread houses are equally charming in this illustrated piece.

This publication marks the fourth book among other collaborations with the Association for the renowned illustrator and paper engineer. The pop-up book retails for $24.95 and is available for purchase online from the Association at Shop.WhiteHouse.History.org or in person at any of the Association’s Washington, D.C. stores.

About the White House Historical Association

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy envisioned a restored White House that conveyed a sense of history through its decorative and fine arts. She sought to inspire Americans, especially children, to explore and engage with American history and its presidents. In 1961, the nonprofit, nonpartisan White House Historical Association was established to support her vision to preserve and share the Executive Mansion’s legacy for generations to come. Supported entirely by private resources, the Association’s mission is to assist in the preservation of the state and public rooms, fund acquisitions for the White House permanent collection, and educate the public on the history of the White House. Since its founding, the Association has given more than $115 million to the White House in fulfillment of its mission.
