Sixty Teachers Invited to the Nation’s Capital for the Prestigious “White House History Teacher Institute”
Week-Long Experience Includes Exclusive Visits to Historic Sites, Introductions to New Education Resources and Technology, Talks from Historians and Former WH StaffWashington, D.C. —
The White House Historical Association will host its fourth annual “White House History Teacher Institute” this summer. The week-long immersive educational experience will be held for two groups of 30 teachers from across the country- and feature exclusive visits to historic sites, introductions to new education resources and technology, and opportunities to learn about White House history from White House historians and former White House staff.
The first group of teachers will attend the White House History Teacher Institute July 8-12 and the second group will attend July 22-26. From 9:00AM to 5:00 PM each day, teachers will be immersed in White House history, learning about topics that include the construction and expansion of the White House, the evolving role of the First Lady, the art of diplomacy in the Executive Branch, and the role of the White House as a living museum for the American people.
Educators will also sample and provide feedback on classroom tools created by White House Historical Association including the recently developed Alexa Skill and the White House Experience mobile app.
The White House History Teacher Institute will take place at the White House Historical Association’s David M. Rubenstein Center for White House History, located just a block from the White House.
“The Association’s education department seeks to create materials that can easily mix, match, and integrate into many different classroom environments,” notes Director of Education, Whitney Hayne. “By exploring the stories of the White House and our resources during the Teacher Institute, participants gain a unique lens that can freshen up their existing curriculum and engage their students in new ways.”
Teacher Institute participants were selected from a competitive pool of candidates and represent more than 30 states -and the country of France! Teachers also represent the elementary, middle, and high school level with a majority specializing in social studies.
Registration for the White House History Teacher Institute in 2020 will be available in late fall of 2019 on the Teacher Institute webpage.

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy envisioned a restored White House that conveyed a sense of history through its decorative and fine arts. She sought to inspire Americans, especially children, to explore and engage with American history and its presidents. In 1961, the nonprofit, nonpartisan White House Historical Association was established to support her vision to preserve and share the Executive Mansion’s legacy for generations to come. Supported entirely by private resources, the Association’s mission is to assist in the preservation of the state and public rooms, fund acquisitions for the White House permanent collection, and educate the public on the history of the White House. Since its founding, the Association has given more than $115 million to the White House in fulfillment of its mission.
