The Midnight Appointments: John Marshall
This portrait of John Marshall by John Wesley Jarvis was done while Marshall was Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Prior to that appointment, he served as secretary of state under President John Adams. Although born in Britain, Jarvis moved to the United States as a small child and spent his entire career as an engraver, artist and painter in America, where he painted portraits of many famous figures. He was the nephew of John Wesley, an influential theologian who helped found the Methodist church.
