President Kennedy Signs the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

Created in 1963.

President Kennedy signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in the White House Treaty Room on August 5, 1963. The room gets its name from a number of treaties signed there, including a document ending the Spanish American War in 1898. The Kennedy Treaty Room was newly redecorated in the Victorian style with dark green walls, red draperies, green carpeting, late 19th century furniture, and portraits of Andrew Johnson, Zachary Taylor, and Ulysses S. Grant.
