President Eisenhower pauses in the West Garden (White House History Number 38)

“President Eisenhower pauses, Sept. 16, 1959, during a round of applause in a talk on September 16 to about 500 foreign educators, representing 60 nations, in the rose garden at the White House in Washington. The Chief Executive cautioned against concentrating too much effort on putting satellites into orbit at the expense of general education. “We need new ideas, and more of them put into orbit,” he said, so that people around the world “will have a greater understanding of each other before it is too late.”
