President Johnson Speaks at UN Anniversary
This photograph by Joseph J. Scherschel shows President Lyndon B. Johnson on stage at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco delivering remarks at the 20th anniversary of the United Nations. This speech, given during the Vietnam War, called for peace between nations and reiterated the basic principles guiding the UN. Standing behind Johnson is Ambassador Lloyd Nelson Hand, Chief of Protocol. The War Memorial Opera House was the site of the signing of the United Nations Charter on June 26, 1945.
