President and Mrs. Clinton at the National Tree Lighting Ceremony
This photograph of President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton was taken during the National Christmas tree lighting ceremony in December 1993. The Clintons appear in the foreground, surrounded by photographers. The tree lighting tradition first began in 1923, when President Calvin Coolidge lit a forty-eight foot fir tree on the Ellipse, with musical accompaniment by a local choir and the members of the U.S. Marine Band.
