Barbara Bush, White House Collection

This painting by Herbert E. Abrams is First Lady Barbara Bush's official portrait. Her husband, George H. W. Bush, was president from January 20, 1989 until January 20, 1993. As First Lady, Mrs. Bush's chief initiative was universal literacy and went on to found the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She also wrote a children's book about her pet, Millie, an English Springer Spaniel. This portrait was officially unveiled at the White House on July 17, 1995.
