Sarah Childress Polk, White House Collection

This oil on canvas painting of First Lady Sarah Polk was completed by artist George Dury in 1883, 34 years after President James Polk's term ended. Dury modeled his portrait after George P. A. Healy's 1846 portrait of Mrs. Polk. Sarah Polk was a well-educated woman and was highly active in her husband's political life. She is also known for hosting the first Thanksgiving dinner at the White House. James Polk was president from March 4, 1845 until March 4, 1849.
