A.J. Downing's White House Landscape Plans - 1850s
This drawing is of the plan created by A. J. Downing for the White House grounds in the 1850s at the request of President Millard Fillmore. Downing created a comprehensive plan for the design of public spaces in Washington, D.C., but sadly died in 1852 before any significant implementation of his ideas.
