Depiction of the North Portico
In 1829, the last year of President Adams' administration, construction began on the North Portico. It was designed to shelter the front steps of the White House for those arriving in carriages or on horseback. James Hoban was again called upon to build the structure, and died in 1831, a year after it was competed.
