Comfort in My Retirement; White House History (Number 33) - Photo 9
President and Mrs. Polk purchased this Louis XV style chair for Polk Place in 1848. The purchase of the Philadelphia-made furniture was made through Alexander Stewart’s shop in New York City. This fine furnishing was barely used by Polk before his untimely death from cholera just three months after leaving office.
