President and Mrs. Kennedy used the White House as a place to promote American artists. Cultural events such as youth concerts, jazz performances, folk dancers, bagpipers, ballets, Broadway musicals, poetry readings, plays, and operas were held on the South Lawn or added to their formal entertaining.
