From 1936 until 1945, Anna Rosenberg met with Franklin Delano Roosevelt over 100 times at the White House and in Hyde Park--more than most of FDR's cabinet members. The Chicago Tribune called her perhaps the closest person to the president. She was FDR's special envoy to Europe in World War II; was among the first Allied women to enter a liberated concentration camp; and at war's end, she stood in the Eagle’s Nest, Hitler’s mountain retreat. In 1950, she was tapped to be the Assistant Secretary of Defense during the Korean War. Though Anna Rosenberg emerged from modest immigrant beginnings, equipped with only a high school education, she was the real power behind national policies critical to America winning the war and prospering afterward. Astonishingly, her story remains largely forgotten . . . until now.
